FAQS

Family, Newborn & Fresh 48 Photography FAQs

The Things Moms Worry About Most FAQs

What if my kids won't cooperate?

Some of my favorite images come from kids being exactly who they are. We'll play, move, explore, and follow their lead rather than expecting perfection.

Is my house too messy for
an in-home session?

Nope. Most families spend 15-20 minutes tidying the rooms we'll use and that's it. I'll help you identify the best spaces with the best light when I arrive.

What if we're awkward in
front of the camera?

Most families feel that way at first. I'll give you simple prompts and direction throughout the session so you never have to wonder what to do.

What if my husband doesn't
want family photos?

He's in good company. Most dads aren't excited about photos, but my sessions are relaxed and interactive, not hours of posing. Many leave saying it was much easier than expected.

I hate being in photos. Can you help?

Absolutely. Most moms tell me this before their session. I'll guide you every step of the way so you can focus on your family instead of worrying about the camera.

What if my toddler has a meltdown?

No problem. Toddlers need breaks, snacks, cuddles, and sometimes a reset. We follow their lead, and those real-life moments often make for the most meaningful photos.

Do you photograph FAMILIES AND newborns throughout Minneapolis and the Twin Cities?

Yes. I photograph newborns, families, and Fresh 48 sessions throughout Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, Minnetonka, Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, and surrounding Twin Cities communities.

Frequently Asked Questions: Family Photography

How much does a family photography session cost?

The session fee is $250 and covers your full photography experience. After your session you'll receive a proof gallery slideshow, then choose from collections starting at $750. Most families invest between $1,000 and $1,500 total.

Where do family sessions take place?

Wherever feels most like you. I shoot in-home for cozy, everyday moments, or outdoors at a location that's meaningful to your family. A park you visit every weekend, your backyard, a neighborhood you love. I think of sessions as chapters in your family's story, so the location should actually mean something to you. I also have favorite Twin Cities spots I'm happy to suggest if you're not sure.

How long is a family session?

About an hour. That's usually plenty of time to capture real moments without kids hitting a wall.

What should we wear?

After booking I'll send you a tips and tricks guide with outfit ideas that photograph well and work together without being too matchy-matchy. The short version: layers, texture, and colors you actually wear. Need outfit inspiration?

What if my kids don't cooperate?

That's just a real family. A little chaos, some resistance, and a few meltdowns are all part of it. I keep sessions low-pressure and playful, and some of my favorite images come from the in-between moments when nobody is trying to pose.

Can we include pets, grandparents,
or other family members?

Yes to all of it. The more the merrier, and it only makes the session feel more like your actual life. If you're bringing your pet, read my tips for including your pet in family photos so the day runs smoothly.

How long until we see our photos?

Your proof gallery slideshow is delivered within 10 to 14 days. From there you choose your collection at your own pace, no pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions: Fresh 48 Hospital Photography

When should I book a Fresh 48 session?

During your second trimester if possible. I reserve due dates rather than session dates, then we schedule once baby arrives. Because I limit Fresh 48 sessions each month, earlier is usually better.

How much does a Fresh 48 session cost?

Fresh 48 sessions are $550. You reserve your spot with $250 during pregnancy and the remaining balance is due one week before your due date. The session includes 30 minutes at the hospital and around 15 digital images delivered in a private gallery.

Which Twin Cities hospitals do you work with?

All of them. If you're delivering anywhere in the Minneapolis and St. Paul metro, I can be there. Just let me know which hospital when you reach out and we'll handle the details from there.

How does scheduling work when I don't know my exact delivery date?

It's easier than it sounds. You book your spot during pregnancy, and once baby arrives you or your partner reaches out to let me know. From there we find a time in that first 24 to 48 hours that works for everyone. No guessing, no pressure. We just figure it out once you're settled.

Can siblings be part of the Fresh 48 session?

Yes, and some of my favorite images come from exactly those moments. A big brother or sister meeting the baby for the first time is what these sessions are made for. Bring them. Learn more in my Prepare Older Siblings for Meeting the Baby post.

What if I don't feel ready to be photographed right after birth?

I hear this a lot. I'm not there to photograph you the way a wedding photographer would. I'm there to document what's happening: your baby's hands, your partner's face, the way your older kid leans in. You'll be in some of those photos, and you'll love them.

What happens during a Fresh 48 session?

I show up at the hospital within the first day or two, spend about 30 minutes with your family, and document what's actually happening. First feeds, tiny stretches, siblings meeting baby. No posing, no props. Around 15 images delivered in a private gallery within 10-14 days. Learn more in my What to Expect During Fresh 48 Photos post.

DO I NEED TO BRING ANYTHING TO A FRESH 48 SESSION?

Nope. Your job is to recover, snuggle your baby, and soak it all in. I work with whatever is already there, whether that's a swaddled newborn, hospital blankets, or a favorite outfit you packed. No props or preparation required.

WHAT IF MY BABY ARRIVES EARLY OR LATE?

That's exactly why I reserve due dates rather than specific session dates. Once baby arrives, simply reach out and we'll find a time within those first 24-48 hours that works for your family.

SHOULD I CHOOSE A FRESH 48 SESSION OR A NEWBORN SESSION?

Fresh 48 sessions document those first hours after birth in the hospital, while newborn sessions capture life settling in at home. Many families choose one, while others love having both parts of their story documented.

Frequently Asked Questions: Newborn Photography

When should we book our newborn session?

During your second trimester if you can. I'll hold your due date on my calendar and we'll nail down the actual session date once baby arrives. I keep my newborn sessions limited each month so I can give every family the time and attention they deserve, so reaching out early helps make sure I have a spot for you.

How much does a newborn photography session cost?

The session fee is $350 and covers your full photography experience. After your session you'll receive a proof gallery slideshow, then choose from three collections starting at $750. Most families invest between $1,100 and $1,800 total.

Where do you shoot newborn sessions?

In your home, anywhere in the Twin Cities metro. Natural light from a window is really all we need, your house doesn't need to be perfectly staged or decorated. I've shot in tiny apartments and busy family homes and the photos are always beautiful.

Do you include siblings and
partners in the session?

Absolutely, and there's no extra charge for immediate family members. Some of my favorite images from any newborn session are the ones with a big brother or sister meeting the baby for the first time.

What if the baby cries, needs to eat, or won't settle?

That's just part of it. We go at baby's pace the whole time. With over 16 years of experience and three kids of my own, I've never met a baby I couldn't work with. Check out my Photo Session for Newborn: 5 Essential Tips to Get Your Baby Ready before your session.

What should we wear?

Simple, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces and your new baby. I send every family a prep guide before the session with specific suggestions so you're not guessing.

How long until we see our photos?

Your proof gallery slideshow is delivered within 10 to 14 days. From there you choose your collection at your own pace, no pressure.

DO I NEED TO CLEAN MY HOUSE BEFORE A NEWBORN SESSION?

Not much. We only need a few spaces with good natural light, and I'll help choose those when I arrive. Most families spend 15-20 minutes tidying the areas we'll use and that's more than enough.
