How to Prepare Your Kids (and Yourself) for a Newborn and Family Photography Session

If you’re getting ready for a newborn and family photography session, you might be feeling a mix of excitement and nerves. I get it. As a mom and a photographer, I know the pressure we put on ourselves to make everything go just right. But here’s the truth: these sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about connection. They’re about love in the middle of the joyful whirlwind.

So let’s talk about how you can prepare your kids (and yourself) in a way that makes this experience meaningful, not stressful.

But first, hello, and welcome! I’m Megan, a Minneapolis-based newborn and family photographer who believes that the beauty is in the real stuff: the snuggles, the chaos, the in-between moments that make this season unforgettable. You can explore my portfolio, learn more about how sessions work, or reach out anytime if you’re ready to tell your story, just as it is, right now.

Let Go of the Picture-Perfect Ideal (Seriously, Let It Go)

This is the big one. If you’re holding onto an idea of matching outfits, perfectly behaved kids, and spotless homes, I invite you to let that go. Real life doesn’t look like a magazine, and your newborn and family photography session shouldn’t either.

The most meaningful moments happen when you’re just being yourselves. If your toddler is running in circles or your baby spits up mid-snuggle, that’s okay. These are the little details that tell your family’s story.

You don’t need to perform. You just need to show up. The love between you and your kids is already there. My job is to help you see it.

I know what it feels like to want everything to go smoothly while also juggling snacks, nap schedules, and the occasional meltdown.

So please hear this: your newborn and family photography session doesn’t have to be flawless. What matters is that you’re there, loving your people in the way only you can. That’s what makes this kind of photography so special. Not the coordinated outfits or tidy rooms, but the unscripted beauty of your everyday life.

Talk to Your Kids Ahead of Time (In Simple, Reassuring Words)

Most kids do better when they know what to expect. A few days before your newborn and family photography session, take a minute to talk to your older kids about what’s coming. Especially if it’s their first time having photos taken at home, a little heads-up can go a long way.

Keep it light and simple. You might say, “A friend is coming over to take some pictures of us while we hang out with the baby. We’ll play, cuddle, and just be together like we always do.”

Let them know they don’t have to do anything special. No need to smile on command or sit still. (That’s not what I’m after anyway.) Reassure them that they can play, take breaks, and even bring their favorite toy or stuffy into the mix.

Some kids might be excited right away, while others take a little time to warm up. Either way is completely normal. I follow their lead and move at their pace. I might sit on the floor and chat or just quietly observe at first. It’s all part of helping them feel comfortable.

Your home is their safe space. That alone helps kids feel more relaxed. And when they’re at ease, those candid, joy-filled moments come naturally.

What to Prep (and What to Let Go) for Your Newborn and Family Photography Session

A little preparation helps the newborn and family photography session flow more smoothly, especially with little ones in the mix. But don’t worry, this doesn’t need to be a production. Focus on a few key things:

  • Have the basics ready: Diapers, wipes, burp cloths, a change of clothes for baby (and maybe for you too), and anything comforting your child might want nearby like a favorite lovey, pacifier, or blanket.

  • Choose outfits that feel like you: Comfort over costume, always. Neutrals and soft textures photograph beautifully, but what matters most is that your clothes feel natural and reflect your family’s vibe. Don’t stress about matching, aim for harmony.

  • Let kids be kids: If your daughter is obsessed with her sparkly boots or your son insists on his superhero cape, it’s okay to include them. Those little quirks are part of your family’s story, and they often end up being the moments you treasure most.

  • Don’t clean for me: If we’re doing your newborn and family photography session at home, you absolutely do not need to deep clean. Choose one or two areas with good natural light. If it helps you feel calmer, tidy up a bit, but leave the rest as is. Your home should look lived in, because it is.

This is about photographing your family as you are. A little prep lets you settle in once I arrive, and I’ll handle the rest.

Feed Everyone First (Yes, Even You)

One of the simplest ways to set your newborn and family photography session up for success is to make sure everyone is well-fed ahead of time. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Have a full meal before the session begins. Hungry kids (and grownups) have a harder time staying calm and present. A solid breakfast or lunch helps everyone feel their best.

  • Plan ahead for toddlers and older siblings. A well-timed meal before I arrive can make a big difference in energy and mood.

  • If your baby needs to nurse or bottle-feed during the session, that’s totally fine. Feeding is part of your story. These moments are quiet, grounding, and often some of the most meaningful images we create.

  • Don’t forget to feed yourself, too. It’s easy to put your own needs last, but taking a few minutes to eat something real will help you feel more grounded and able to enjoy the session.

This isn’t about doing everything just right. It’s about giving your family the space to settle in and be themselves. A little care ahead of time helps everyone feel more relaxed.

Consider a Fresh 48 Session

If you love the idea of capturing your baby while everything is still brand new, a Fresh 48 session might be for you. These sessions happen at your birthplace (hospital, birth center, or home) within the first two days of your baby’s arrival. They’re different from a traditional newborn and family photography session because they’re raw and real. No posing. No pressure. Just your new family in the bubble of those first hours. Think tiny fingers, new sibling curiosity, sleepy snuggles, and the kind of love that fills up a whole room.

Curious about what a Fresh 48 session really feels like? Take a peek behind the scenes and see how beautifully real those first hours can be.

Trust the Process (and Me!) During Your Newborn and Family Photography Session

You don’t need to have all the answers or feel like you have to run the show. Once I walk through your front door, you get to take a deep breath and be in your home with your people.

I’ll guide the newborn and family photography session in a way that feels relaxed and natural. I’m paying attention to the light, the mood of your home, and the little rhythms of your family. I might gently direct when needed, but mostly I’m there to observe, listen, and let your story unfold in its own way.

I expect noise and movement. I expect diaper changes and nursing breaks. I expect kids to bounce between rooms or need a moment to warm up. That’s not something to fix; it’s all part of the beauty of photographing your family right where life is actually happening.

You don’t need to entertain, tidy, or have a plan. You need to be there, loving your family in the way you already do. I’ll take care of the rest.

Remember What You’re Really Here For

This isn’t just about getting photos for your wall. It’s a chance to pause and soak in the beautiful, messy life you’ve built. If your kids are wild or your baby needs to be held the whole time, that’s okay; those are the moments worth remembering. When you look back at your newborn and family photography session, I want you to feel it all over again. The snuggles, the laughter, the realness. You’re already doing it right.

If today’s post helped you feel a little more ready (and a little less overwhelmed), I’d love to help you plan a newborn session that feels relaxed, meaningful, and true to your family. You can explore my newborn portfolio to see what these in-home sessions look like. When you’re ready, reach out, and we’ll make a plan that fits your life right now. Have questions or just want to say hi? Come find me over on Instagram. I’d love to connect there, too.
