What Time of Year is Best for my Family Session?

Every year I have people ask “what time of year is best for my family session?” We are so lucky to have ALL FOUR seasons in Minnesota, so you really can’t go wrong. Read on for the perks of each season and things to consider for your seasonal family session!

SPRING

Spring is when the flowers start to bloom, the grass is green and the long awaited sunshine has returned!!  The excitement of the new season is palpable, as we are all itching to get outside and enjoy nature – so keep that ball rolling!

A lively spring session often makes families feel like they have ticked the first big family to-do off of their list for the year. If you want a golden hour session with a backdrop of endless possibilities then spring is probably your season!! Keep in mind that Crab Apple Trees usually bloom around late April to early May if you are looking for that background.

SUMMER

Do you love being at the lake or park? Then a summer family session might be the way to go. Everything is sunny and green, so slip on your favorite sundress and sandals and enjoy that sunshine!! Keep in mind that morning or evening sessions are usually the most comfortable for families as you can beat the heat and humidity.

FALL

Fall is the most popular time for a family session because everyone is thinking of holiday cards, plus the fall colors are gorgeous. However I also find it really busy with school starting back up and fall activities in full swing. I will admit that golden hour in the fall is magical at my favorite nature center though. If you want fall photos then I would plan on scheduling early as sessions are limited and book up quickly.

WINTER

The underdog of the four seasons, but truly magical!! Winter seems to not be as popular for a family session because of the colder temps and white stuff on the ground. But I am here to tell you that you can get some beautiful images of what is the longest season of the year in Minnesota.

Lace up your skates, make a snowman, throw snowballs, hug everyone tight by the snow covered pine tree and then treat yourself to some hot cocoa. Stand out from all the other holiday cards and embrace this awesome season.
